Gunbarrel
Heavenly

About this zone
Gunbarrel is the California-side signature double-black: a northwest-facing face that drops roughly 1,700 vertical feet from about 8,360 to 6,624 feet. Expect a long, sustained fall line of steep, tightly spaced moguls and a few rocky ribs. When filled with fresh snow it’s a bump-lover’s dream; the trees left of the main line often hide soft, sheltered pockets.
Best When
This one comes alive later in the day when firm bumps have had a chance to loosen up. It’s also a strong call after fresh snow if you’re looking for a sustained, fall-line test, especially if you’re willing to hunt the trees skier’s left for softer, more sheltered turns.
Watch Out For
The pitch doesn’t let up, and the line is long enough to punish sloppy pacing. The troughs can be deep and tight, with icy patches and rocks lurking around the rocky ribs, especially when coverage is thin or the snow has been skied out. If you’re not fully committed to steep moguls, plan an alternate way down rather than dropping in and hoping it mellows.
