About this zone

Kirkwood’s primary backside zone, and one you earn by choosing it. It takes a ride out via Caples Crest and Iron Horse, then you’re rewarded with big, open terrain that feels less hectic and more exploratory than the front side. Sunrise trends northeast to east, so it gets clean morning light and more sun exposure than a lot of the mountain. Up high it’s mostly open with rolling pitches and playful gullies; down low, the trees come into play for more texture and line choice. It’s intermediate to advanced skiing across the board, with no true beginner outs, but it doesn’t have an especially tight or intimidating feel.

Best When

This zone shines on clear mornings or after a storm when visibility is good and you want space to roam. The east-facing aspect catches early sun, making it a strong first destination if the front side is still cold or firm. It’s also a great choice when you want quieter skiing and are happy trading convenience for calm, expansive terrain. Plan it as a mid-morning to early-afternoon objective so you’re not rushing the exit.

Watch Out For

Access and egress matter here. You’re committed once you drop in, and you’ll need to budget time to get back via Iron Horse to return to the front side. Snow can firm up quickly after early sun, especially on clear days. Visibility can be tricky in flat light due to the openness, and skiers’ left brings more rock features and small cliffs that demand attention. Covered Wagon is even more committing, with extra hiking and limited bailout options, so only head that way if you’ve planned for it.
