Shirley / Solitude
Palisades Tahoe

About this zone
The heart of Palisades’ backside intermediate skiing. Shirley and Solitude serve up wide, consistent groomers with fast chairs and a relaxed, locals-first feel once you make the trek over the ridge. The terrain is mostly open and confidence-building, with enough trees between runs to keep things interesting without ever feeling tight or committing. It’s not the longest vertical, but the skiing is direct, efficient, and easy to lap once you’re back here.
Best When
This zone shines on colder days and during storms thanks to its mostly north-facing, sheltered terrain that preserves snow well. It’s a great choice when you want predictable turns, fast laps, and a break from the frontside chaos, especially mid-morning once the lifts are fully spinning. During storms, Shirley can be a quiet winner if it stays open while access elsewhere gets delayed, making for unexpectedly empty laps.
Watch Out For
Getting here takes effort, and that same access funnel means lines can build late in the day as everyone funnels back toward the frontside. Snow quality can hold up well, but crowds will find it when visibility is poor elsewhere. As you push farther toward Solitude, the terrain sneaks more technical than it looks, with rocks and small cliffs that matter when coverage is thin. Keep your speed in check near lift unloads and traverses, where traffic stacks up.
