The Palisades
Palisades Tahoe

About this zone
The Palisades are the resort’s namesake rock formation near the top of the mountain, and they ski the way they look: steep, exposed, and strictly expert. Access involves a short hike that can be icy, and the terrain up top has real consequence if you’re casual about footing or line choice. National’s, over on the far skier’s right, is the most straightforward way in, but it’s still not a place to “see what it’s like.”
Best When
This zone is at its best right after a storm when there’s enough soft snow to take the sting out of the steeper entrances and any drops you choose to ski. If it’s been dry, windy, or warm-cold cycling, the Palisades tend to feel a lot more serious, and most strong skiers will wait for a refresh rather than force it on hardpack.
Watch Out For
The hike and staging area can be slick, and the exposure near the edge is not forgiving, so move deliberately and keep your spacing. Expect firm, scoured, or variable snow once the fresh gets tracked, and don’t assume conditions improve after you commit. Down low, watch for speed differentials and slower traffic in the runout, especially when visibility is flat or the snow is firm.
